Quick summary

  • The signature is the gap between the two men: irreproachable outside, crushing inside.
  • The 12 signs follow a trajectory: the public character, the strategic seduction, installed control, then escalation.
  • Half the signs describe the state he puts you in rather than his behaviour. That's your best detector.
  • One isolated behaviour proves nothing. Repetition, accumulation and direction do.
  • The real giveaway is your resistance: a clumsy man improves, a narcissist escalates.

If you're typing «narcissistic man» into a search engine, intellectual curiosity has nothing to do with it. One specific man has put you on alert: your partner, your ex, maybe the father of your children. And something doesn't add up, because this man everyone adores makes you live, behind closed doors, something nobody imagines.

That's trap number one with this profile. The gap between the public man and the private one is so violent that you come across as unhinged the moment you try to describe it. So, naturally, you stop describing it. And you end up alone with your questions.

Here are the 12 typical behaviours of a narcissistic man, in the order they appear. You don't need to tick all 12, by the way: what you are looking for is a trajectory, and you will know very quickly whether you recognise it.

The 12 signs at a glance

Four stages, and the signs that go with each one. If one group speaks to you more than the others, go straight to it.

  1. In company: the public character (signs 1 to 3)
  2. Early on with you: strategic seduction (signs 4 to 6)
  3. In private: control installed (signs 7 to 9)
  4. When you resist: the mask slips (signs 10 to 12)

One reminder before we start, and it matters. Half of these behaviours, taken alone and once, can happen in any relationship. What makes a sign is repetition, accumulation, and above all the overall direction: everything converges towards his control and your shrinking. The underlying pattern, the one that explains why everything converges, is narcissistic control in a relationship: a mirror that has to be fed, whatever the cost.

The sceneWhat others seeWhat you live through
In companyA brilliant, funny, generous manThe mismatch only you perceive
Early on, with youA magnificent whirlwind romanceAn intensity that will anchor you later
In privateNothing, nobody's there to see itThe digs, the comparisons, the threshold moving back
When you resistA woman «getting difficult»The escalation, the reversal, the guilt

In company: the public character (signs 1 to 3)

  1. Calibrated charm, never free: He's brilliant, funny, attentive, but watch who he's like that with. Useful people, and the ones still left to win over. The clumsy waiter or the slow cashier see a very different man. That variable politeness is one of the earliest indicators there is.
  2. Generosity with an audience: The grand gestures arrive when there's a public: the gift in front of your friends, the anecdote where he rescued you, the compliment paid in company. Without spectators, the generosity drops away, oddly enough. You end up noticing something strange: you're treated better outside than at home.
  3. All his exes are crazy: Not one story that ended normally. Only «hysterical» women, «toxic» ones, women who «destroyed him». Listen carefully to that account, it does two things: it flatters you (you're different) and it prepares the ground. That portrait of the mad exes, for instance, is precisely the one he'll paint of you one day.

Early on with you: strategic seduction (signs 4 to 6)

  1. Everything moves too fast, and he sets the tempo: Early declarations, immediate plans, constant presence: the exact pattern of love bombing. The detail that changes everything: try slowing down a little, and see whether your pace is respected, or negotiated.
  2. You're «different from all the others»: Careful, he isn't complimenting what you do. He's granting you a status. It's intoxicating, let's not pretend otherwise... and it's a trap. A granted status can be withdrawn. And it will be, at exactly the moment it hurts most.
  3. He tests your boundaries, casually: A borderline remark «as a joke», a lateness with no apology, something you confided in him repeated to others. These are probes. He's measuring what you let go, quite simply. And each small thing swallowed widens the perimeter of the next.

In private: control installed (signs 7 to 9)

  1. He aims at your strengths, not your weaknesses: It's counter-intuitive, and it's his signature. Your job, your humour, your family, whatever makes you proud: that's precisely where the remarks land. A criticised weakness can be clumsy advice. A strength systematically undermined never is: that's a demolition strategy.
  2. Your reality is renegotiated constantly: What you saw, he didn't do. What he said, you misunderstood. What you feel, you're exaggerating. In time you doubt your memory enough to check in secret. This daily gaslighting is the heart of the system.
  3. Your world shrinks, with no formal ban: He never forbade you from seeing your friends. He simply made every outing expensive: a mood before, reproaches after, a scene the next day. In that kind of situation, there's a good chance that within a few months, without quite knowing how, you find yourself doing the calculation on your own. And that's exactly what was planned.

When you resist: the mask slips (signs 10 to 12)

  1. Cold anger replaces debate: A disagreement doesn't get discussed, it gets paid for: silence for days, affection cut off, a leaden atmosphere. The punishment is never named, which forces you to guess your offence. And so to monitor yourself continuously.
  2. He becomes the victim, publicly if needed: The day you finally raise your voice, after months of erosion, you discover the reversal: he's the one suffering, he's the one enduring, he's the one telling people around you that he «worries about you». That pre-emptive campaign has a precise aim: destroy your credibility before you speak.
  3. Your leaving triggers reconquest, not reflection: Promises, tears, therapy announced, the return of the man from the early days. Then, once you're back, the system returns. Worse. That reconquest cycle has its own codes, the same ones that make breaking up with a narcissist an exercise apart, one you prepare for.

What it does to you, and why you still doubt

If you recognised the trajectory, one question probably remains: «so why do I still love him?» Because the system is designed for it, quite simply. That alternation between the wonderful man and the destructive one gets you hooked. It's the same mechanism as gambling, the one built on the unpredictable reward.

And because he trained you to doubt, too. Months of «you're exaggerating» leave marks: at the moment of concluding, you still wonder whether you're the one being dramatic.

So reread the list, and notice one detail: half the signs don't describe his behaviour, they describe the state he puts you in. That's the best detector you have, and it's rarely wrong. Many of these behaviours also appear in the red flags in a man, of which they are the most complete version, and the most dangerous.

One last word. You may have read this article for a sister, a friend, a colleague. What you can do for her starts with this: stay a connection that doesn't judge. The system only works if she is isolated. Every person who stays in her life is a possible way out.
