What a birth date can tell you about a couple
You know your partner's birth date by heart. It's probably one of the few pieces of information you'll never forget. And yet most people only use it to blow out candles once a year, while three different traditions each read a complete temperament in it.
Numerology sees a number there, the life path, which sums up the way a person moves through life. Western astrology reads a sun sign, so a way of loving. Chinese astrology reads a lunar year, so a rhythm. These three readings don't say the same thing, and that's precisely why we cross them here rather than picking just one.
The result: an overall score, three detailed scores, and above all explanations that are about the two of you. If you'd rather fill in a questionnaire together, the love compatibility test in twenty questions answers the same urge by a completely different route.
The life path, the number hidden in your birth date
It's the simplest calculation in all of numerology, and you can redo it by hand while you read. You add up every digit of the date, then reduce the total to a single digit. One exception: if you land on 11, 22 or 33, you stop there. Those are the master numbers, they don't reduce.
An example in thirty seconds
Take 14 March 1990. Add: 1 + 4 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 27. Reduce: 2 + 7 = 9. Life path 9. Another example, 29 December 1990: 2 + 9 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33. Stop there, it's a master number.
What each life path looks for in love
| Path | Keyword | What it wants from a relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drive | Admiration, and room to decide |
| 2 | Gentleness | Presence, tenderness, few conflicts |
| 3 | Words | To be laughed with and listened to |
| 4 | Solidity | Promises kept and a clear framework |
| 5 | Movement | Novelty, and definitely no leash |
| 6 | Care | A home, habits, someone to protect |
| 7 | Reflection | Silence, depth, no small talk |
| 8 | Ambition | A partner moving at the same speed |
| 9 | Giving | Meaning, generosity, a shared cause |
| 11 | Intuition | To have their feelings taken seriously |
| 22 | Building | A life project, not a fling |
| 33 | Love given | To be loved for themselves, not for what they give |
Two identical life paths guarantee nothing at all. Two 5s together means two people who want to leave, and sometimes not in the same direction.
The star sign, the sky on the day you were born
Your sun sign depends on the day and the month, not the year. It's the position of the Sun at the moment of your birth, and it's by far the best-known astrological piece of data. It describes a way of loving: what reassures you, what makes you run, the way you say things when they're difficult.
The four elements, the real key
Before comparing sign by sign, you look at the elements. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) charges ahead. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) builds. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) exchanges. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feels. Fire and Air feed each other, Earth and Water understand each other, and couples mixing two distant families have more translating to do for one another.
Watch out for the cusp dates. If you were born on the 20th or 21st, you might belong to the previous sign: the boundaries shift slightly from one year to the next. Our calculation uses the most common reference dates, the ones you'll find in almost every almanac.
If your sign interests you in particular, we've written a full article for each of the twelve. The one on Libra love compatibility or the one on Scorpio go into far more detail than any calculator can display.
The Chinese sign, the one almost nobody calculates correctly
Here it's the year that speaks. Twelve animals, one per year, and a cycle that starts over. Except the Chinese year doesn't begin on 1 January: it starts at the lunar new year, which falls between 21 January and 21 February depending on the year. Everyone born in January and the first half of February therefore belongs to the previous year's animal.
This is the most frequent mistake made by online calculators, and it affects nearly a tenth of the population. Our tool uses the real Chinese new year dates, year by year, from 1924 to 2043. Someone born on 1 January 2000 is not a Dragon, they're an Earth Rabbit.
The four affinity triangles
| Triangle | The three signs | What unites them |
|---|---|---|
| The action triangle | Rat, Dragon, Monkey | Energy, daring, a taste for risk |
| The method triangle | Ox, Snake, Rooster | Patience, strategy, an eye for detail |
| The independence triangle | Tiger, Horse, Dog | Freedom, loyalty, straight talking |
| The gentleness triangle | Rabbit, Goat, Pig | Sensitivity, calm, a taste for comfort |
And where does the element fit in?
Each animal comes back every twelve years, but with a different element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. A Wood Dragon and a Fire Dragon aren't really alike. These five elements chain together in cycles, one feeding the next or tempering it, and that's what fine-tunes the Chinese score in your result.
Six pairs are called harmony pairs in Chinese tradition, the famous secret friends: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, Horse and Goat. They belong to no triangle, and yet they work extremely well.
Why cross three readings instead of one
Because none of the three is enough on its own. The sun sign is too popular to be precise: twelve boxes for eight billion people makes for very wide boxes. The life path is finer but ignores temperament entirely. The Chinese sign gives a rhythm, not a way of loving.
Crossed, they correct each other. Two sun signs said to be incompatible can have life paths that fit together perfectly, and you'll see it straight away in the three bars of the result. That's also why we show the detail rather than a lone percentage: the overall figure is worth nothing without what makes it up.
A high score on one axis and a low one on another is the most common case, and often the most interesting to read. That's where the real relationship dynamics live.
And if the score is low?
Then nothing happens. Really. None of these three systems has ever predicted a break-up, and none has ever stopped a story lasting thirty years. What a low score says is that your two temperaments don't align spontaneously, so you'll have to put into words what other couples pass between them without thinking.
Plenty of people land on a page like this with a question at the back of their mind, and it isn't really an astrology question. If that's you, the healthy relationship test or the love or habit test talk about what's going on between you today, not about what the stars were saying on the day you were born.
Take the test together rather than alone. The result matters less than the conversation it starts, and that's true of just about every test on this site.
