The year gives the animal and the element. But the Chinese year starts in late January or early February, which is why we ask for the full date.

Love compatibility by Chinese zodiac sign: how does it work?

Chinese astrology gives each year an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, and then the cycle starts again. Each animal has a character, and for centuries tradition has said which animals get along well, which complete each other and which step on each other's toes. That's what Chinese zodiac compatibility is: a reading of your couple based on your two birth years.

Our tool does that calculation for you. You enter two dates, it finds the two animals, their element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water) and the relationship that links them on the wheel: same affinity triangle, secret friends, opposite signs, harmful pair or nothing in particular. From that it draws a score, an explanation of each animal in love and a piece of advice for you two.

Want a broader reading? The birth date also gives your star sign and your life path, and crossing the three readings gives a more nuanced result. And if what interests you is your relationship as it is, with its real arguments and real plans, the compatibility test for two doesn't look at the sky, it asks you questions.

Finding your Chinese sign: watch out for the new year

The Chinese year doesn't start on 1 January. It begins at the lunar new year, between 21 January and 20 February depending on the year. Someone born on 15 January 1990 is not a Horse but a Snake, because the year of the Horse only began on 27 January 1990. It's the most common mistake in the tables you find online, and it affects roughly one person in ten.

Our calculator uses the real new year dates, year by year, from 1924 to 2043. The table below gives each animal's years to help you find your bearings, but if you were born in January or February, run the calculation with the full date: that's exactly why we ask for it.

SignRecent yearsIn love
Rat1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020attentive, talkative, a little anxious

Dragon1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024wholehearted, generous, proud
Snake1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025deep, seductive, jealous

Pig1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031generous, trusting, easy-going

The element can be read in the last digit of the Chinese year: 4 and 5 for Wood, 6 and 7 for Fire, 8 and 9 for Earth, 0 and 1 for Metal, 2 and 3 for Water. A Dragon of 2000 is a Metal Dragon, a Dragon of 2012 is a Water Dragon.

The four affinity triangles

Tradition sorts the twelve animals into four groups of three, four years apart. The signs of one triangle share a way of seeing life: it's the most favourable bond for a couple, the one where you understand each other without having to explain.

TriangleThe three signsWhat brings them together
The triangle of actionRat, Dragon, MonkeyEnergy, boldness, a taste for success
The triangle of methodOx, Snake, RoosterPatience, strategy, an eye for detail
The triangle of independenceTiger, Horse, DogFreedom, loyalty, frankness
The triangle of gentlenessRabbit, Goat, PigSensitivity, calm, a taste for comfort

Being in the same triangle doesn't mean being alike in every way. The Rat is more cautious than the Dragon, the Dog more worried than the Tiger. But when a decision has to be made, you lean the same way, and that's what counts over time.

Secret friends and opposite signs

Besides the triangles, tradition knows six pairs of secret friends, two animals that aren't alike but complete each other perfectly, and six pairs of opposite signs, face to face on the wheel, six years apart. The first make very solid couples, the second make couples that are very attractive at the start and harder afterwards.

Type of pairThe two signsWhat tradition says
Secret friendsRat + OxQuick wit and quiet strength
Secret friendsTiger + PigBoldness and gentleness
Secret friendsRabbit + DogDelicacy and loyalty
Secret friendsDragon + RoosterVision and an eye for detail
Secret friendsSnake + MonkeyIntelligence and play
Secret friendsHorse + GoatDrive and tenderness
Opposite signsRat + HorsePlanning versus improvising
Opposite signsOx + GoatThe concrete versus the dream
Opposite signsTiger + MonkeyPride versus mockery
Opposite signsRabbit + RoosterReserve versus frankness
Opposite signsDragon + DogConfidence versus doubt
Opposite signsSnake + PigDistrust versus trust

There are also six so-called "harmful" pairs: Rat and Goat, Ox and Horse, Tiger and Snake, Rabbit and Dragon, Monkey and Pig, Rooster and Dog. It isn't an outright opposition. It's more of a wearing down, small irritations that keep coming back. The result tells you when that's your case, along with what to watch.

A couple of opposite signs is not doomed, far from it. It works differently: each keeps their own domain instead of trying to convince the other. Many couples that have lasted thirty years are made of two opposites who stopped converting each other.

The five elements, what nuances the result

Each animal returns every twelve years, but never with the same element. A Fire Tiger (1986) and a Water Tiger (1962) don't live their love the same way. The five elements follow each other in a cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, and Water feeds Wood. Two elements that follow each other get along well; two elements one step apart control each other.

ElementThe Chinese year ends inWhat it gives the couple
Wood4 ou 5growth, generosity, a need for projects
Fire6 ou 7passion, drive, anger that passes quickly
Earth8 ou 9stability, patience, a taste for the concrete
Metal0 ou 1rigour, loyalty, difficulty bending
Water2 ou 3sensitivity, intuition, a need for reassurance

In the result, the element moves the score up or down by a few points, never more. It's a nuance, not the substance. Two opposite animals with elements that feed each other remain a tense duo, with a little more gentleness on bad days.

And if the score is low?

Then nothing serious happens. This score measures the agreement between two symbolic temperaments, those of your birth years. It measures neither your feelings nor the solidity of what you've built. Thousands of couples of opposite signs live very well together, and couples from the same triangle break up.

What a low score can give you is a conversation. Read your animal's portrait and your partner's, and ask yourselves what's accurate and what isn't. Most of the time, that's where it gets interesting: you recognise yourself in one line, the other recognises themselves in another, and you talk about an irritation you'd never named.

Run the calculation together rather than each on your own. The number matters less than what you'll say to each other while reading the portraits.

Your questions about Chinese zodiac compatibility

How do you know if two Chinese signs are compatible?
First you look at the relationship between the two animals on the wheel: same affinity triangle (four years apart), secret friends, opposite signs (six years apart), harmful pair or no particular link. Then you refine with each one's element, which depends on the year. Our tool does both and explains the result to you.
Which Chinese signs go best together in love?
Couples from the same triangle: Rat, Dragon and Monkey with one another; Ox, Snake and Rooster; Tiger, Horse and Dog; Rabbit, Goat and Pig. And the six pairs of secret friends: Rat and Ox, Tiger and Pig, Rabbit and Dog, Dragon and Rooster, Snake and Monkey, Horse and Goat.
Which Chinese signs don't go together?
The six opposite pairs, six years apart: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig. They are the tensest couples of the tradition, but also often the most attractive at first. "Not going together" here means "not working the same way", not "not loving each other".
I was born in January, what is my Chinese sign?
Probably the previous year's. The Chinese year starts between 21 January and 20 February, so a January birth almost always falls in the previous Chinese year. Enter your full date in the calculator, it knows the new year date for every year.
Should the element be taken into account?
Yes, but as a nuance. The animal gives the temperament, the element says how it's expressed: a Fire Horse is more hot-headed than an Earth Horse. In our calculation, the element moves the score by a few points when the two feed or clash with each other.
Are the results saved?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, the dates go nowhere and nothing is kept. You can run the calculation as many times as you like, with whoever's dates you like.
