How the game “Never Have I Ever” works

“Never Have I Ever” is a game you can play with friends or as a couple. It is a very simple game where you are faced with situations, and you simply say whether “I have” or “I never have”, that's the whole idea. For example: “Never have I ever been to a wedding”.

If you answer “I have”, it means you have already been to a wedding. If you answer “I never have”, it means you have never been to one. It sounds really basic, but most of the time it starts a debate, brings back memories and makes for a really good moment together!

Here is how our game engine above works:

1

Enter your names and pick the length of the game

You can play with 15, 30 or 100 questions. If you are not sure, go for 15: the game will offer to continue once you reach the end anyway.

2

Read the question out loud

Every question starts with “Never have I ever”. The best way is to read it out loud, as if you were playing with real cards.

3

Answer one at a time

The game shows whose turn it is to answer, then asks the other one “And you?”. Once you have both answered, you move on to the next question, and the other one starts.

4

See who confessed the most

At the end of the game, you each get a chart with your number of “I have” and “I never have”. That settles once and for all which of you two is the wiser one!

As you can see, there is no drinking and no forfeits in our version: you answer, you talk about it, and you move on. If you prefer games where confessing has a price, you can follow up by going to spin the wheel and draw a forfeit, it goes perfectly with this one.

The difference between the classic version and the couples version

The main difference lies in the questions. In the classic version, you get very general questions taken from everyday life, like “Never have I ever drunk alcohol” or “Never have I ever had a car accident”.

For couples, it is much more centered on the relationship and on what you live through together: “Never have I ever cheated”, “Never have I ever lied to my partner”, “Never have I ever sulked to get attention”, “Never have I ever thought about having kids”, etc.

The other difference is the way you play. With friends, you raise a finger or take a sip, often five or six of you. As a couple, you take the time to talk about each answer, and that is the whole point of the game. By the way, if you like this kind of two-player game, chances are you will also enjoy choosing between two impossible options, it is the same spirit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a game last?

Count about 10 minutes for 15 questions, and double that for 30. Since every question is asked to both players, a 15-question game is actually 30 answers.

Do we have to drink or do forfeits?

No, in our version there is no drinking and no forfeits: you answer, you talk about it, and you move on. Which means you can play any time, even on a Tuesday night on the couch.

Are the questions risqué?

A few of them, yes, but nothing embarrassing between two people in a relationship. And if you are looking for a much hotter game, we have what you need to seriously turn up the heat as a couple.

Can we play long-distance?

Yes, it actually works really well. One of you opens the game, reads the question out loud on a video call and clicks for both.

Can we replay without getting the same questions?

Yes. The game remembers the questions it has already asked and picks from the ones you have not seen first. After three 30-question games, you will have seen pretty much everything.
